Seventh Pay Commission may bring pay parity in civil servants, officers up in arms

Associations of IAS officers have held several formal and informal meetings to weigh options before them to thwart any attempt to whittle away at the advantages they now enjoy over others by virtue of securing top grades in the civil services exam.

Facebook Gives Its Employees a Taste of 2G Speeds

Facebook is making sure that its app works the same way regardless of whether you’re on a 2G or a 3G network. Thanks to countries like India, the social networking giant developed a ‘Lite’ version of its app. But it fails to live up to its billing.

So, how can Facebook deliver on its Lite experience promise? For starters, its own employees and developers are living the 2G-life so they can rectify issues on a real-time basis. To set the ball rolling, Facebook started the culture of 2G Tuesday wherein people at the company will be offered 2G connectivity for the day.

Indian retirement system ranks last in global pension index: Mercer report

The Indian retirement system has been ranked last in the global pension index, according to a Mercer report. Denmark has been rated as the country with the best retirement system globally, while Australia, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK have increased their pension age to offset the increase in life expectancies.

India’s index value fell from 43.5 in 2014 to 40.3 in 2015, primarily because of a recent review conducted by the Economic Intelligence Unit that showed a material reduction in its household savings rate.

GOOD NEWS - Govt raises monthly bonus calculation ceiling to Rs 7,000 from Rs 3,500

A worker speaks on his mobile phone as he makes gear parts at a manufacturing unit in Kolkata, India, June 1, 2015. Reuters

Workers have something to rejoice, as the union cabinet has reportedly decided to double the wage ceiling to Rs 7,000 per month for calculating bonus to people working in organisations having 20 or more employees.

The Bill also has a provision to increase the eligibility limit for payment of bonus from the salary or wage of an employee from Rs 10,000 per month to Rs 21,000.

The government wants the changes to be effective from 1 April, 2015 and the amendment bill will be placed before the Parliament for approval.

The move comes in the wake of a one-day strike carried out by 10 central trade unions on 2 September. The government had assured them to revise the wage ceiling and bonus calculation ceiling.

The Central government is empowered to revise the ceiling for monthly bonus calculation under Section 12 of The Payment of Bonus Act 1965, which is applicable to every factory or establishment with 20 or more employee on any day during a financial year.

Earlier, the amendment to the eligibility limit for payment of bonus and the calculation ceilings was done in 2007, which became effective from 1 April, 2006.

Government May Clear Bill for More Bonus, Hike in Wage Limit Today

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet decided to double the wage ceiling for calculating bonus to Rs 7,000 per month for factory workers and establishments with 20 or more workers.
"The Payment of Bonus (Amendment) Bill, 2015 to enhance the monthly bonus calculation ceiling to Rs 7,000 per month from existing Rs 3,500 was approved by Union Cabinet here," a source said after the Cabinet meeting.
